Planning ahead: How to arrange a direct cremation in advance

Making end-of-life arrangements in advance is one of the most thoughtful and practical decisions you can make.

For those who prefer a simple, dignified, and cost-effective option, direct cremation is increasingly popular. Planning ahead ensures your wishes are respected and eases the burden on your family during an emotional time.

What Is Direct Cremation?

Direct cremation is a straightforward process where the deceased person is cremated shortly after death, without a funeral service. With direct cremation, you should expect the same level of care you would expect from an experienced funeral director, but the arrangement is simpler and there is no public ceremony. There are many reasons why you might choose a direct cremation, and the most common reasons are cost, flexibility and choice.

Families often choose to hold a memorial service later, at a place of their choosing.

Why Plan a Direct Cremation in Advance?

Planning ahead offers several advantages:

    • Clarity of Wishes: Your family will know exactly what you wanted
    • Financial Control: You can secure today’s prices and avoid inflation by prepaying.
    • Peace of Mind: Your family will face fewer decisions and less stress during a difficult time.
    • Simplicity & Choice: Direct cremation is efficient and flexible, allowing memorials to be arranged in a more personal setting later.

How to Arrange a Direct Cremation in Advance: Steps 1 to 6

    1. Research Providers
Look for reputable cremation providers or funeral homes that offer direct cremation services. Check reviews, credentials, and compare pricing.
    2. Understand What’s Included
Confirm the details of what’s covered: transportation, legal paperwork, the cremation itself, return of ashes, and any optional extras
    3. Prepay via a funeral plan
We highly recommend that you consider a prepaid direct cremation plan.
    4. Document Your Wishes
Clearly outline your wishes in writing. Include instructions in your will, but more importantly, inform your next of kin and ensure they know where to find the documents.
    5. Register with the Funeral Director
Consider whether you wish to appoint a funeral director at the time of a death or when you set up a prepaid plan. Some planning options such as life insurance policies which cover your funeral do not actually plan your funeral, they may offer a simple text box for you to input your wishes, which can be useful for some. What these do not consider are the specific funeral director, funeral location, type of funeral or even something like whether you wished for a burial or cremation. These policies only provide financial cover for a funeral however working with a funeral director for your plan can allow for a comprehensive plan to be secured as well as the financial security also.”
    6.  Review and Update as Needed
Life changes—you can revisit your plans periodically, especially if you move, or change your personal preferences.
